SIKESTON, Mo. -- A woman is in custody after reportedly shooting her husband Monday afternoon.
Around 5 p.m. Monday, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety received a call of a subject shot on Daniel Street. Officers found a man with a gunshot wound to his torso.
"The man said his wife shot him at their home located at 414 Daniel, just minutes before our arrival. He reported that his wife was still in the home next door," department public information officer Capt. Jim McMillen said.
Officers surrounded 414 Daniel St. and attempted to contact the wife, identified as Yulonda L. Mitchell.
"We soon learned that the couple had three children in the home and the mother was reluctant to exit," McMillen said in a news release.
A family member was able to call the woman and relay instructions on leaving the home unarmed. The suspect surrendered at the front door without incident and the children were unharmed, McMillen said.
The husband was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was last reported in serious but stable condition.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for the home and processed the scene.
Mitchell, 38, was charged with first-degree domestic assault, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm. Bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety.
