Winter weather advisory issued

The National Weather Service has put parts of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois under a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. today.

Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Perry, Scott and Wayne counties in Missouri and Alexander County in Illinois are included in the advisory area.

Sleet and freezing rain are expected to fall this afternoon. The icy precipitation shouldn't freeze on roadways, but will freeze on elevated surfaces, the weather service said. As temperatures fall tonight travel could become hazardous.

The low is expected to drop into the teens tonight in Cape Girardeau.
