Nearly 700 students from 33 area junior high and high schools competed in the annual Math Field Day competition last month at Southeast Missouri State University.

The event was sponsored by the mathematics department and the Southeast Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The competition consisted of 21 individual events, five team events and one problem-solving event.

Individual and team winners from area schools were:

Notre Dame High School Bill Hamm, first place in word problems; Ben LeGrand, second in number bases; Jeremy Bratton, third in algebra I; Amisha Shah, first in algebra II and exponentials and logarithms; Chris Bucher, third in word problems; Lori Maurer, second in analytic geometry.

In team events, Notre Dame winners were: Bratton, LeGrand, Hamm and Tom Berkbigler, second place in algebra I; Chrissy Aver, Adam Cox, Bucher and Shah, second in algebra II; Amy Eftink, Angela Judd, Greg Rubel and Maurer, third in trigonometry.

Cape Central High and Junior High schools Jeff Riley, third in geometry; Aaron Bruening, first, and Jennie Lukens, second in word problems; and Rene Robinson, first in calculus.

In team events, Cape Central winners were: Bryan Daume, Wade Russell, Amir Chaudhari and Jeremy Driskell, third in algebra I; Jessica Anderson, Jeremy Freeman, Bruening and Lukens, first in algebra II; Amanda Webb, Mike Steele and Riley, third in geometry; Sally Taylor, Tarina Kang, Andy Dial and Robinson, first in medley.

In individual open events, Cape Central winners were: Alyssa Browning, first in probability; Russell, third in computational mathematics; Bruening, second in mental arithmetic; and Lukens, third in mental arithmetic.

Jackson High School Eddie Upchurch, Nathan Dirnberger, Andrew Margrabe and Rodney Amos, third in the team medley event.

In problem solving, Jackson High School won first place in the school event.

In individual open events, Jackson winners were: Chris Dittmer, first in computational math.

Meadow Heights Matt Yount, first in number theory; and Aaron Garland, second in probability.
