A recipe by Marie James of Cape Girardeau for "Easy Sausage Pizza" won the R.B. Rice recipe contest at the SEMO District Fair.
James won $100, a ribbon, an apron and award certificate. This is the first time James has entered a recipe contest. She is an experienced cook, having raised 10 children.
Easy Sausage Pizza
1 can buttermilk biscuits (10) for crust
1 c. mild salsa
7 slices American cheese
1 lb. R.B. Rice medium pork sausage
1/2 red and 1/2 green pepper, diced
1 c. shredded Mozzarella cheese
In a skillet, brown sausage until crumbly. Drain excess grease, and set sausage aside. roll out biscuits to fit a 10-inch pizza pan. Spread the salsa over the biscuit crust. Place the 7 slices of American cheese over the salsa. Spread the sausage evenly over the cheese. Top with red and green peppers. Sprinkle shredded Mozzarella over top of the pizza. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly. Cut into slices for serving.
