The Westminster Presbyterian Church will hold its 50th anniversary celebration from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
According to information provided by the church, the church was proposed in 1962 by five founding families who held their first service in the basement of a Cape Girardeau home. When the congregation numbered 82 people, they petitioned the Presbyterian Church to become organized as an official church. The Presbyterian Church approved the petition in December 1962, and the next month the Westminster Presbyterian Church was officially organized. The first minister installed was the Rev. Thomas Bass, and in January 1964, ground was broken for the construction of the present church that stands at the corner of Cape Rock Drive and Perryville Road.
