MALDEN, Mo. -- A gray cloud of smoke hovered over Riddle Hill between county roads 118 and 110 Sunday afternoon as a large fire made its way north along Crowley's Ridge, burning about 200 acres.

According to Malden fire chief Winford German, the fire stayed contained within the perimeters of county roads 110, 118 and 111 and originated just off County Road 118 near Oak Tree Lane. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Crews worked throughout the night and into Monday morning.

Fire department volunteer Roy German said Monday afternoon, "We kept it contained and kept the residents safe until the rain came this morning."

High winds and downed trees from the 2009 ice storm were contributing factors in the fire.
