The National Weather Service warned Monday that a "significant and extended" heat spell will blanket the region this week after a summer of cooler-than-normal temperatures.
In a special weather statement, the weather service said a dome of high pressure will allow hot and humid conditions to build, brining highs above 90 degrees by midweek and heat indexes above 100 degrees by the holiday weekend, and likely into early next week.
The statement covers much of Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
