Wayne County sheriff will not seek re-election

GREENVILLE, MO. -- After serving the citizens of Wayne County for nearly six years, Larry Plunkett Sr. announced Tuesday he will not seek another term as sheriff. Plunkett, who retired after 30 years with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, was initially elected in November 1998 to fill the remaining two years on Nathan Hale's unexpired term. He was subsequently elected to his own four-year term. Factoring into Plunkett's decision were several personal reasons, including his health, age and family obligations.

Candidates have until March 30 to file for the election.
