More than 300 properties in Cape Girardeau are under a precautionary boil order for drinking water because of a water-main break Tuesday afternoon.

According to the city’s website, some properties in the Cape Hills, Cape Village and Tanglewood areas will be under a boil order until 4 p.m. Thursday.

The water-main break may have lowered water pressure in those areas, leading to possible contamination.

Residents in affected areas should take these precautions:

  • Boil water vigorously for three minutes before use.
  • Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic ice maker.
  • Disinfect dishes and other food-contact surfaces by immersing them for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
  • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled.

Updates on the boil order will be on the city’s website at www.cityofcapegirardeau.org.
