An ongoing program in Debbi Schorey's first-grade classroom at Orchard Elementary is volunteer reading. Children love to hear stories, and it enables them to become better readers. As they visualize the words and imagine what is being described, they become more familiar with phrases and with putting the words together to form an image.
Their vocabulary, of course, is extended when parents read to them, and just by the clues within a sentence, children can figure out what the words' real meanings are.
Reading to children is important. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, friends and baby sitters can take part.
Volunteer reading is encouraged at Orchard School.
People interested in volunteering can call 243-9555.
Sign-ups for the summer reading programs in Jackson are Monday at the Jackson Public Library, and June 5 at the Riverside Regional Library.
