Total hours of volunteer service to Cape Girardeau Veterans Home residents was 22,615 during 1993, up 3,744 hours -- 16.5 percent -- over 1992, said home administrator Dr. Sam McVay at Volunteer Appreciation Night Friday.
Two volunteers were recognized who had passed the 1,000-hour milestone during 1993. Six have achieved this recognition since the home opened in June 1990.
Of these six, two, Barbara Yallaly and Euil Trickey, were singled out for passing the 2,000-hour mark during 1993. Yallaly is the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary home representative. Trickey is home representative for the Masonic Service Association.
The two volunteers passing the 1,000-hour mark were Agnes Bendel, with over 1,500 hours, and Frieda Howard, with over 1,300 hours.
Others recognized for 1,000-plus hours totals were Vergie Templeton, with over 1,600 hours, and Lester Harris with over 1,200 hours.
These and hundreds of other Veterans Home volunteers whose total hours exceeded at least 100 and who had served some hours during 1993 were recognized during the annual Volunteer Appreciation Night gathering held in the Veterans Home dining room.
Volunteers who had exceeded 800 hours as of Dec. 31, 1993, were Al Mason and John Eldridge. Recognized for over 700 hours were Hal Scowden, Nola Eldridge and Chester Herrington.
Those with over 600 hours include Ada Jean Wagoner, Harry Humphrey, Thelma Herrington, Dorothy Scowden, Hazel Hahn and Ralph Chitty.
The 500-hour-plus volunteers recognized were James Tindall, Ray Ritchie, James Rex Haynes, Louis Birkman, Al Schlenker and Fern Schlimme.
Those with over 400 hours included Helen Cracraft, Marie Borchelt, Dolly Aubuchon, Betty G. Cato, Susan Noce, James Harnes, Alberta Lundgren, Paul Seabaugh, Ken Schreiner and Evelyn Seabaugh.
Exceding 300 hours during 1993 were Gladys Lawrence, Roger Ebers, Lois Woodford, John "Doc" Yallaly, Jim Foster, Mildred Foster, Albert Elfrank, Sonya Kiefer, Jim McClard, Naomi McClard, Bob Harper, Alberta Heimbaugh, Lawrence Mirgaux, Ginger Beaudean, Bill Hasler, Loren Shanks, H.K. Ken Carter, Howard Spicer and Marie Spicer.
Recognized for over 200 hours of service were Tonya English, Velma Dobbs, Vance Combs, Eleanore McGuire, Hazel Fiehler, Rupert Fiehler, Marie Sebastian, Tom Duclas, George Jenkins, Jack Kinder, Geneva Schwartz, Bill McDowell, J.W. "Dick" Dobbs, Fannie Gosche, Ann E. Brown, Clem Crain, Nikki Crader, Roy Rhodes, Roni Hayden, Terry Turner, Fern Shultz, Gale Holland, Lou Maevers, Charles Shultz, Melvin Bacon, Doris Criddle, Steve Francis, Wilda Rudert and Charles Kight.
Volunteers recognized for over 100 hours service were Virgil Elfrink, Harold Makins, Barbara Slinkard, Betty E. Cato, Ann Hefele, Betty Henderson, Hugh LeDure, Katherine King, Louis Beaudean, Dahlia Emmons, Francis Renard, Charles Woodford, Matt Thompson, Homer Schnurbusch, Raymond Rampley, Herb Nance, Aaron Johnston, Norm Sebastian, Walter Loennecke, Raymond Mashek, Harold Nothdruft, Millard Schlimme, Ernest Miner, Lavern VanWeelden, Nelson Steiner, Helen Schnurbusch, Virginia Nance, Bill Bollinger, Virginia Fenimore, Francis Miner, Dale Wolfenkoehler, Harold Henderson, Perry Grindstaff, Helen Trickey, Walter Haynie, Bob Rosenquist, Lillian Burgfeld, Betty Rosenquist, Mike Hyson, Milton Nitsch, Lloyd Zimmerman, George Bartlett, Glen Bollinger, Tom Revel and Rosalee Sides.
Twelve new volunteers started during 1993 and were recognized for exceeding at least 40 hours service during the partial year. They include Don Adams, Millie Bolick, Marie Brantley, Jack Cracraft, Jerry Dixon, Hazel Elliott, Thelma "Dee" Hargrave, Bob McLemore, Bud Miller, Imogene "Imer" Miller, Jim Riley and Vinson Wingo.
Several resident veterans do volunteer work at the Cape home doing such things as tending the many bird feeders, watering plants, actively working on the Resident Council, assisting the activities department and especially helping other veterans in many ways.
