MTV and United Way of America developed a partnership in 2005 to send 18- to 24-year-olds to help rebuild the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. Now the program, "Alternative Spring Break," reaches beyond storm victims.
Projects range from construction and remodeling to community leadership work. Applicants are chosen for diversity and pay only for transportation to their volunteer site and a few nominal fees.
