The Cape Girardeau Board of Education is slated to announce the site of its new vocational-technical school today.
The board meets at 5:45 p.m. today at the Central Junior High cafeteria.
On April 1, voters approved a tax increase to fund construction of the school, in addition to a new elementary school and other renovations to school buildings. Bonds to fund construction of the project were sold last week.
"All through the process we've been looking for an appropriate location for the vocational school," said Dr. R. Ferrell Ervin, president of the board.
But the process of property shopping was complicated by the fact that the school board wants to buy about 80 acres of land.
The district's long-range plan calls for location of the vocational school and a future high school building on the same tract.
"There are not that many tracts in Cape Girardeau that are that size," Ervin said.
Ervin said the board appears close to reaching an agreement to purchase a piece of property. A closed meeting is set at the beginning of today's board meeting to discuss purchasing real estate.
Announcement of the site is listed on the agenda and Ervin is hopeful that after the closed meeting the board will have reached an agreement.
The board had hoped to announce the site prior to the April 1 election but wasn't able to reach agreement.
The new elementary school will be built at Sprigg and Bertling, where the school district has owned property for many years.
