Vision House shelter reports weekend burglary

A burglary and theft of cash were reported this weekend at a Cape Girardeau shelter.

Someone pried open the basement door of the Vision House, 14 N. Sprigg St., sometime after 8 p.m. Sunday, according to Vicki Moore, a volunteer who works at the home.

The thief then broke into and stole $40 from the house resale shop cash register, Moore said. The shop sells donated goods to the public as a means to generate money for the home.

The Vision House is a faith-based, not-for-profit, long-term shelter for women. The house helps women recover from addiction and operates purely from donations given by the public and local churches.

"It's very disconcerting," Moore said of the burglary. "It's taking money out of these girls' hands."

In addition to the stolen cash, the thief caused more than $200 in damage, she said.

The burglary was reported to police around 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sgt. Barry Hovis said. No one was in custody, and police had no suspects in the crime Tuesday night.

Another burglary occurred a few months ago at the Vision House, but the thief was caught and pleaded guilty to the incident, according to Moore.
