Volunteers with at least 24 hours of service during 2004 were honored at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Night recently at the Cape Girardeau Missouri Veterans Home. The volunteers served, combined, approximtely 24,184 hours in 2004.
Dorothy Klein, Jewell Lincecum, Doyle Mouser and "Pete" Rhodes were named volunteers of the year.
Rhodes was selected for his outstanding performance on the golf tournament committee and his hard work on the annual employee appreciation night.
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary Department of Missouri home representative since 1999, Jewell Lincecum has 3,107 hours.
New program
Dorothy Points, who started during 1994 as home representative of the Missouri State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, has 184 hours. The new DAR program recognizes the growing number of female resident veterans with various activities, especially on Mother's Day for those who are mothers.
Two volunteers nearing 10,000 total hours have served since the home's opening: Euil Trickey, home representative of the Masonic Service Association with 9,496 hours and Barbara Yallaly, home representative of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Department of Missouri with 9,480 hours.
Serving 6,727 to 2,000 hours are Vergie Templeton, Naomi McClard, Louis Birkman Jr., Frieda Howard, Lillian Birkman, Jim Tindall, Betty G. Cato, Dorothy Klein, the late James "Rex" Haynes, Doyle Mouser, Bob McLemore, Al Mason, Jim Foster, Mildred Foster, Shirley Welter, Claude Estes, John Sonderman, Don Adams and Laverne VanWeelden.
Volunteers serving 1,999 to 1,000 hours are Jim Harnes, Gary Estes, Chester Herrington, Fern Schlimme, Fern Shultz, Ginger Beaudean, Lois Woodford, Gladys Lawrence, John "Doc" Yallaly, Betty Hahs, Margaret Kracke, Neal Edwards, Glenneta Vogelsang, Robert W. Volunteer Residents
Four resident veterans are part of the volunteer corps. They serve as officers on the Resident Council, help set up for activities, assist with spiritual programs, work with plantings around the home and offer overall help. They are Hugh LeDure, Bill Walker, Charles Clippard and Lillian Burgfeld.
