SCOTT CITY -- A new monument in Scott City Park will honor area veterans.
The memorial will contain names of veterans on a series of black, granite slabs in one-inch-high white lettering. The monument will be identical to one in Jackson.
"The concept of the project is a memorial that goes on and will serve a function in the future," said George Pendergrass, chairman of the project. "Being in a war is more than an accident of birth, so we want to honor everyone who has served in the armed forces. Anyone who applies will be accepted."
The memorial is open to anyone who lives or has lived in or around Scott City, Kelso or Commerce. Anyone who has or is serving in the military service will be eligible for recognition.
The Kiwanis Club of Scott City is spearheading the project. The club covered the initial cost of erecting the monument, and is seeking assistance for the remaining costs from those who want to be honored.
The club is requesting $55 from those who wish to add one line of not more than 28 letters. A second line costs another $55.
"This is not a fund-raiser," said Pendergrass. "The club is asking people to help with the cost of putting names in the black granite. Every penny will go into the cost of the monument. The money will not go into a Kiwanis Club account."
Applications may be obtained from Roth Hardware on Second Street East or from Pendergrass Enterprises, 1301 Warner Street, in Scott City. The application along with check or money order payable to the Scott City Area Veterans' Memorial should be sent to Donald Swanner, treasurer of the Scott City Kiwanis Club, 210 Forrest Drive, Scott City, MO. 63789. Include your name, address and telephone number.
In the event the monument is not completed the money will be returned to applicants.
