Work to relocate utilities at the Independence Street and East Rodney Drive/Gordonville Road intersection in Cape Girardeau will force some traffic closures beginning Monday.
Independence Street, west of the intersection, will be closed to traffic in both directions for about three days, city officials said.
East Rodney Drive north of the intersection will be closed to traffic in both directions for about two days, immediately after the reopening of Independence Street.
Westbound Independence Street traffic will be detoured south on Gordonville Road and north on Silver Springs Road during the closing. Eastbound Independence Street traffic will be detoured north on Silver Springs Road, east on Themis Street and south on East Rodney Drive.
During the closure of East Rodney Drive, southbound traffic will be detoured west on Themis Street and south on Silver Springs Road to Independence Street. Northbound traffic will be detoured west on Independence Street, north on Silver Springs Road and east on Themis Street.
City officials said the entire intersection will be closed beginning Sept. 19 for a period of two months for roundabout construction. Officials said the project is designed to improve traffic flow. It is funded with voter-approved Transportation Trust Fund 4 sales tax revenue.
Federal funds from the Missouri Department of Transportation will pay 80 percent of the cost. The city will pay 20 percent.
