Southeast Missouri State University offices will remain closed Monday and reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m.
The university announced the change Friday afternoon.
University officials were trying to spread the word through the media as there was no way to officially notify all staff members.
University spokeswoman Ann Hayes said it was decided to close the additional day because most organizations and agencies also would be closed to observe the New Year's holiday.
Staff members responsible for maintenance when the university is closed should contact their supervisors about working Monday.
Students will return to campus Jan. 9.
