Dr. Fred Janzow, director of the Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning and professor of biology at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named the new dean of the School of University Studies.
Janzow will replace Dr. John Hinni, dean of the School of University Studies, who plans to retire in May. Janzow's appointment is effective May 23.
"Fred has the obvious and significant benefit of having been part of University Studies for some years," said Provost Dr. Charles Kupchella. "He knows the strength of and the challenges facing the program very well. He has exhibited lots of insights regarding those issues and possible solutions to them. He is also highly regarded by people in general education and the liberal learning community throughout the country."
Janzow, who received Southeast's Faculty Merit Award in 1991, came to Southeast in 1975 as an instructor of biology. He was promoted to assistant professor of biology in 1980 and to associate professor of biology in 1982. In 1990, he was named coordinator of the Freshman Year Experience program, and in 1992 he was promoted to professor of biology.
Since 1993, he has served as director of the Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning.
As dean of the School of University Studies, Janzow will be responsible for five universitywide programs: University Studies, the Honors Program, the Governor's Scholars Program, the Writing Outcomes-Writing Across the Curriculum Program and the Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning.
University Studies is an objectives-based program consisting of 48 credit hours, including a freshman seminar required of all entering freshmen, a 36-hour lower-division curriculum, and a nine-hour upper-division interdisciplinary curriculum.
