Landscapes in pastels and paintings by artist Nancy Newman Rice will be on display in the Southeast Missouri State University Museum Gallery during the month of June. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artist during an opening reception from 2 to 4 p.m. June 1 in the museum gallery.
Rice's work arises from the tradition of George Seurat's post Impressionist paintings done in France around the turn of the century. The resemblance, however, ends with the association of dots of paint used to compose outdoor scenes.
"What interests me are the seemingly chaotic patterns found in the visible world," Rice said. "I choose dots of color as a systematic way of ordering these patterns and ultimately representing what I see."
Rice teaches art at Maryville University in St. Louis and has compiled an impressive record as a professional artist. Her work was displayed in a one-person exhibit at the Saint Louis Art Museum, and she has exhibited at Carol Shapiro and Elliot Smith galleries in St. Louis. In addition, her work has been shown at the Sazama Gallery in Chicago.
The artist has been the recipient of the Mid America Arts Alliance/National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Award. Rice holds bachelor of fine arts and master of fine arts degrees from Washington University in St. Louis.
The pastels and paintings on exhibit range in price from $400 to $3,000.
University Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Museum parking is located in front of Memorial Hall on Circle Drive on the campus.
