Enrollment for the 1993 spring semester at Southeast Missouri State University increased by 31 over last year's headcount, according to a final enrollment report compiled after the first four weeks of spring semester classes.

Total headcount stands at 7,916, compared with 7,885 last spring, and the 7,440 total reported after the first full day of spring semester classes last month.

Fred Snider, assistant to the vice president of enrollment development, attributed the four-week upturn primarily to new financial procedures in place, which allowed the university to drop the schedules of students who had not paid their fees or made plans to pay their fees on an installment payment plan by Jan. 4.

Snider said 75 percent of the students, whose schedules were dropped, were reinstated during the past month after they settled their financial matters.

Snider also attributed the rise to a greater number of graduate students enrolled this spring. Total graduate student headcount stands at 657, up 58 or 9.7 percent from this time a year ago.

Snider called the census report "very positive," considering the university's fall headcount, which was down 272 from fall 1991 figures, and its enrollment management program. Under tighter admissions standards, more than 300 applicants in each of the past two fall semesters were denied admission due to inadequate academic preparation, Snider said.
