The United Way of Southeast Missouri will collect diapers for families in need through the end of November.
A goal of 5,000 diapers has been set, and the proceeds will be distributed to lower-income families around the Cape Girardeau area.
United Way of Southeast Missouri executive director Elizabeth Shelton said for some families, diapers are an often-overlooked burden.
"The average cost of diapers is $25 to $40 per week for just one child, and disposable diapers are not covered by federal aid programs such as WIC and food stamps," she said. "So families in need often have to choose between purchasing food or purchasing diapers."
The drive is being organized by GRACES Women's Leadership Council of United Way, and businesses are encouraged to join the collection effort by setting up a drop-off point.
"I hope every business or church will choose to be a part of the diaper drive," Shelton said. "Knowing her child's diapers are taken care of even for just one week can bring much-needed peace of mind to a new mother."
Information and materials for hosting a collection point can be found at www.unitedwayofsemo.org/GRACES or by phone at (573) 334-9634.
