With the 49th Annual Area Wide United Way campaign well under way, more than $684,000 of the $895,000 goal, or 77 percent, has been committed in pledges at this time.

"We are grateful to our community for their generous support of our local programs and agencies. Every donation we receive has an impact," said Nancy Jernigan, Area Wide United Way executive director .

The United Way campaign is divided into four divisions: Corporate/Employee, Public Service, Professional and Patron. Overall, employee campaigns within the Corporate/Employee and Public Service divisions account for an estimated 85 percent of the total contributions raised and, this year, companies that have already turned in their campaign results have shown significant increases.

Successful campaigns include: Nordenia, Inc., raising $29,052 in 2002 compared to $24,900 in 2001, a 17 percent increase; Southeast Missouri Hospital, raising $40,172 in 2002 compared to $35,124 in 2001, a 15 percent increase; State Farm, raising $7,479 in 2002 compared to $2,170 in 2001, a 245 percent increase; Coca Cola, raising $4,108 this year compared to $2,898 last year, a 41 percent increase; and Hutson Furniture, raising $1,431 this year compared to $65 last year, a 2,102 percent increase.

"Local dollars are proven to be the most effective way to impact local needs," said Larry Dunger, 2002 campaign chairperson. "The Area Wide United Way continually focuses on results to ensure that donations are being invested into effective local programs and contributions are making a real impact in our community."

The Area Wide United Way has raised more than $12 million since its first local campaign in 1954. This year's contributions will be used to fund 44 programs within 31 local agencies. The United Way Board will soon determine allocations for 2003.

Administrative expenses are kept at or below 16 percent, and more than 99 cents of every dollar raised is invested back into local communities. Overall, more than 250 volunteers are involved in the 2002 campaign.
