ANNA, Ill. -- A 14-year-old Dongola boy was killed and his 17-year-old brother seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon in Union County.
Killed was Lucas H. Panici. His brother, Jacob A. Panici, was admitted to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau where he was in critical condition Saturday night.
Illinois State Police said the accident occurred at 2:15 p.m. on Christian Chapel Road just south of Highway 146.
The accident occurred as a car driven by Jacob Panici was northbound on the gravel road. A dump truck driven by Gaylon Light, 47, of Murphysboro was southbound.
Both drivers put on their brakes as they approached a bridge. The driver of the car over steered as he was trying to keep the car from going off the roadway. The car struck the dump truck head on, state police said.
Gaylon Light suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Two passengers in the dump truck -- Cindy Light, 44, and Caleb Green, 2, both of Murphysboro -- suffered minor injuries. They were treated and released at Union County Hospital in Anna.
