TWO SERIOUSLY HURT IN ACCIDENT

ALTO PASS, Ill. -- Two people were seriously injured when their vehicle struck a tree in rural Union County near Alto Pass, Ill., Tuesday.

Billy J. Doughty, 56, of Alto Pass was driving east on Bald Knob Road near Mulligan Road at approximately 2:50 p.m. when he swerved to avoid an oncoming car at a sharp curve, Illinois State Police. The vehicle slid off the road and struck a tree.

Doughty was taken to Union County Hospital with major injuries. A passenger in the car, Betty Doughty, 52, was taken to Southeast Missouri Hospital, also with major injuries.

There was no contact between the two vehicles and the driver of the second car, Stephen J. Spiros, 44, of St. Louis was not injured.
