Two large trucks collided Monday morning on southbound Interstate 55 just south of Cape Girardeau, and police diverted traffic around the crash for about two hours.
The driver of a Freightliner truck began to lose control of his vehicle, and he used emergency lights about 9:40 a.m. at milemarker 94. A “Shred It” box truck rear-ended the Freightliner, sustaining substantial damage to the front of the vehicle.
The driver of the box truck suffered serious injuries and was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center, Cape Girardeau police patrolman Jay Freeman said.
The Freightliner truck veered off the right side of the road after being struck and ended up 700 feet in a nearby field before stopping. The driver of the Freightliner suffered minor injuries, Freeman said.
Freeman said police are not releasing the names of either driver. He said the collision still is being investigated, and summonses could be issued.
Cape Girardeau police, Cape Girardeau firefighters, Cape Girardeau County private ambulance and the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the crash.
