The Republican and Democratic parties have scheduled separate events targeting female voters in Cape Girardeau in the coming days.
The Southeast Missouri State University College Republicans will host a "Women for McCain/Palin" lunch at noon Wednesday on the fourth floor of the University Center Ballroom. Southeast alumna and Cape Girardeau businesswoman Kathy Swan is scheduled to speak to an audience of university students and others from the community.
Women for McCain/Palin is also seeking volunteers to operate its phone bank today during one of two shifts between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. At 1 p.m., Brenda Talent, wife of former U.S. Senator Jim Talent, and Katie Smith, former director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture, will participate in a conference call for all shift workers. The phone bank is at the Cape Girardeau Victory Office, 400 Broadway, Suite 501. Volunteers are asked to RSVP with field director Bethany Boller by contacting her at bethany@mogop.org.
The Cape County Central Democrat Committee will host a house party at 11 a.m. today at 1520 Sylvan Lane in Cape Girardeau. The event is geared toward undecided female voters and will feature Sheila Simon, the daughter of late U.S. senator Paul Simon.
Also today, the public is invited to attend the Cape Girardeau Area Democratic Meet-up Group's annual fish fry at noon at Cape County Park shelter 10. The $10 admission for the meal will support Democratic candidates.
