SIKESTON, Mo. - A motor vehicle accident on Interstate 55 sent five people from Arkansas and Mississippi to the hospital Monday afternoon.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that at around 1:12 p.m. a 2006 KIA Rio driven by Editha B. Carter, 43, of Ward, Ark., struck a 2008 Chevrolet van driven by Darris A. Jefferson, 26, of Louisville, Miss., in the rear.

Jefferson and Chevrolet passenger Michael Calcote, 45, of Natchez, Miss., were treated for moderate injuries. Carter and KIA passenger Earlina Hunter, 51, of Ward were treated for moderate injuries while a second passenger, a 12-year-old from Ward, sustained minor injuries.

The KIA was totaled while the Chevrolet sustained extensive damages. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
