Two teenagers are in police custody accused of early morning thefts from at least five vehicles in Cape Girardeau.
Cape Girardeau police spokesman Darin Hickey said the department received several reports of two teenage boys looking into vehicles around 5 a.m. Friday. Police located the boys and took them into custody following a short pursuit on foot.
Hickey said the boys are believed to have entered at least five vehicles in the areas of Luce and Whitener streets and North and Marie streets, including a vehicle in the 1700 block of Whitener Street where Christmas gifts were taken from a car's trunk. Officers found several items on the boys believed to be stolen, Hickey said, and were able to retrieve the Christmas gifts from a shed at a nearby residence and return them to the owner.
The boys, both 15 years old and from Cape Girardeau, are being charged through juvenile court with theft from a motor vehicle and stealing. Their names are not being made public, which is standard procedure in juvenile criminal cases.
No forced entry was made into vehicles, according to police reports.
