Boardings of Trans World Express flights at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport have increased sharply through the first three quarters of 1997.

TWE had 923 more boardings from January through September compared to the same period a year ago.

The airline handled 3,093 passengers during the first nine months of the year, compared to 2,172 a year ago.

Increases have been noted every month, with July the peak month at 421 enplanements, 118 more than July of 1996.

The three-quarter figure of 3,093 is only 191 less than the entire year of 1996, when only 3,284 passengers boarded.

Only 912 passengers boarded during the final three months of 1996, well below the totals of 1,242 during the final quarter of 1995.

TWE is the city's only commuter airline, with 19 flights a week to the St. Louis airport.

Trans World added another flight a day, Sunday through Friday and initiated Saturday air service at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport Oct. 1, increasing roundtrip flights to 19.

The carrier has canceled fewer flights in recent months.

Two years ago, a number of flights were canceled for lack of travelers, noted Bruce Loy, manager of the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.

A recent report that nine flights had been canceled in a week's time this year is erroneous, said Loy and representatives of TWE.

"No way have we ever canceled nine flights in a week," said a local TWE spokesman.

Loy, a licensed commercial pilot who was named airport manager in February of this year, agreed. Loy has had been working with Trans World Express.

TWE has served Cape Girardeau since 1986. Trans States Airlines now operates TWE.

Bootheel Area Rapid Transportation, which ferries area residents by van to and from the St. Louis airport, is TWE's major competition.
