A semi-tractor trailer crash shut down part of Interstate 55 traffic south of Cape Girardeau for hours Sunday evening.

Law enforcement officials confirmed the truck, traveling north on I-55 at between Cape Girardeau and Scott City, went off the road into the Diversion Channel at mile marker 92 about 7 p.m.

The driver was injured, but officials could not comment on his condition.

The northbound lane of I-55 was shut down, and traffic was diverted at the exit just north of Scott City. As of 9 p.m., the interstate remained closed.

Officials could not comment on the accident's cause, but the crash ocurred during heavy rain.
