Troops, families mixed over Afghan surge

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- U.S. troops and military families say they have mixed feelings about President Barack Obama's plan to send 30,000 more American troops into Afghanistan.

Bill Thomas, who watched the president's speech at his home near Camp Lejeune, N.C., said he supports Obama's plan as long as he doesn't send extra troops in vain. Thomas has a son headed to Afghanistan with the Marines next year.

Jamie Copeland, the wife of a Marine at Camp Lejeune, said she wishes the war was over. But she said Marines need reinforcements in Afghanistan.

Army Pfc. Jeff Williams, a soldier at Fort Drum, N.Y., said he's "more than ready" to go.
