The artists of Trans-Siberian Orchestra played to a crowd of 1,750 Thursday night at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau. Against a backdrop of three cathedral windows the storyline of "Beethoven's Last Night" was infused with pyrotechnics, laser lights, graphics and energetic music.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra always donates a dollar from every ticket sale to a local charity. Before the start of the concert, Kevin Casey of KGMO joined members of the orchestra and presented a $2,000 check to the Lutheran Family Children's Services.
The songs "What Is Eternal," "A Last Illusion" and "Midnight and Madness" were each colored by coordinating graphics, lights, smoke and fire.
This was the first Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert for Ray McCormick of Essex, Mo.
"I thought it was pretty impressive. The storyline was good, thought it was very well performed," McCormick said. "I like that they stay true to their own form and style. You can tell they are just out there having fun."
Heather Cash of Poplar Bluff, Mo., was also new to the band.
"I loved it. It got me amped up, energized," Cash said. "I've never seen anything like it."
The performance centers on the composer's last night and his conflict with Satan, and if he is willing to rob the world of his music in exchange for his immortal soul. In the end, Fate tricks Satan and the music remains in the world.
Eric Schuler from Carbondale, Ill., brought his son, Gryphon Ayers, for his 17th birthday.
"Whoa. That's about it," Ayers said.
