One woman is dead after a trailer fire Saturday night near Fruitland. Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton confirmed the fire that destroyed a trailer home in the 100 block of Silktree Circle claimed the life of an elderly woman.

One woman is dead after a trailer fire Saturday night near Fruitland.

Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton confirmed the fire that destroyed a trailer home in the 100 block of Silktree Circle claimed the life of an elderly woman.

She was one of two residents inside the residence when the fire began about 6:30 p.m. The other occupant escaped to safety.

The identity of the dead woman was not released late Saturday.

Fruitland fire chief Robert Francis said fire departments from Fruitland, Jackson, Millersville, East County and Gordonville assisted in extinguishing the blaze.

Firefighters still were at the scene 2 1/2 hours later.

Francis also said at this time, firefighters had not determined the cause of the fire.

No firefighters were injured while putting out the fire, and they prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

Firefighters called in tanker trucks from other fire departments in the region because a fire hydrant at the scene was not working properly.
