MARBLE HILL, Mo. — A fire at McCormick Tire Brokers Inc. destroyed two trailers and damaged eight parked cars Tuesday near Marble Hill.
The fire began when a man burned trash near used tires that were being stacked as they were unloaded from a trailer, according to owner David McCormick. The man burning trash was not employed by McCormick but was allowed to be on the property.
The fire spread quickly to several tires and continued burning in a 20-yard area in front of the business’ shop buildings, McCormick said.
“They were burning standing up,” McCormick said of the tires. “You get one burning, it doesn’t take long.”
Marble Hill firefighters were the first on the scene, responding to the call at 1:30 p.m. Glenallen, Leopold and North Bollinger County fire protection districts and Zalma firefighters provided mutual aid.
Marble Hill fire chief Jim Bollinger said they had the fire contained in about an hour.
“They did a good job,” McCormick said of the firefighters. “I’m just happy it was the middle of the day and the department was here in force.”
