Three Rivers College will open an outreach site at Scott City High School, expanding a relationship between the high school and college. Enrollment began with a registration event last week.

Scott City public schools have a long-standing relationship with the community college through dual enrollment credit courses for high school students. Three Rivers approached the Scott City Chamber of Commerce about bringing a site to Scott City. The project has expanded into a full-service outreach center available to all area residents.

"Three Rivers College and the Scott City educational community have worked together for many years," said Missy Marshall, director of the Three Rivers College center in Sikeston, Mo. "This is just an expansion of that effort, in order to assist everyone who wants to achieve their goal of a higher education degree."

The Scott City outreach site will offer art, English, college writing, computer literacy, college algebra, psychology and public speaking classes Monday through Thursday, with evening classes available. The classes will be in conjunction with the college's fall 2013 semester.

Scott City educational leaders are excited about the announcement. Superintendent Diann Ulmer said the arrangement will provide opportunities for higher education in a more geographically convenient location for local people.

"It will limit travel time and expense for the students and provide additional opportunities for evening classes for nontraditional students," she said.

High school counselor Ladonna Pratt said the arrangement is "exciting for our newly graduated A+ students who can earn their general education credits here in their hometown. It also provides additional employment for certified staff in this district as we have eight of our current teaching staff already qualified to teach the evening courses."

Scott City is one of 118 schools with an A+ Schools designation, which allows students to earn scholarships for two years of tuition and fees at any of Missouri's community colleges.

Registration is open for summer and fall classes at Three Rivers. Anyone who did not attend the registration event can call the center in Sikeston at 573-472-5223 to set up an advising appointment.
