Cape Girardeau voters will consider a field of three candidates for the Board of Education during elections April 3.

Martha Zlokovich, who had a strong showing in her first bid for school board last year, filed Friday for a spot on the ballot. She will vie against incumbents Dr. Ferrell Ervin and Mark Carver for one of two, three-year positions.

The race is one of several to develop late in the filing period. Candidates were required to file before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Most school districts have two, three-year terms available, but there will be three new faces on the Chaffee Board of Education in April.

In addition to filling the two seats normally elected, the district also needed two candidates to complete the final years of unexpired terms vacated by board members for different reasons last year.

Incumbent Mick Wessel, who was appointed to complete a portion of one of the unexpired terms last year, and Ronnie Eifert Jr. both filed for three-year terms. Ron Eskew was the only candidate to file for one of the special terms.

"It's an unusual situation because the board can only appoint people to fill a term until the next election," said Chaffee school Superintendent Dr. Arnold Bell. Because no other candidates filed for the second one-year term, the school board will appoint someone to the position.

Voters in the Perryville School District will consider four candidates, including husband and wife candidates, Andrew and Christine (Monier) Ostrowski. The couple will vie against incumbent Carolyn Pontillas and William Paradee for two seats on the board.

Andrew and Christine Ostrowski lived in Cape Girardeau between 1994 and 1998. He lost to Attorney General Jay Nixon in his bid for the nomination to the U.S. Senate in 1998. A year later he unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the Cape Girardeau school board.

This is Christine Ostrowski's first bid for public office. Efforts to reach the couple were unsuccessful..
