Just after breakfast Oct. 29, Cape Girardeau County Jail correctional officers broke up a fight involving six inmates.
Correctional officers Christopher Eldridge and Zachary Steward were picking up serving trays in one pod at 7:25 a.m. when they saw six inmates fighting in a separate pod. The inmates included Marcquise Taylor, Kareem Wiley, Gabriel Houseman, Cedric Lucious, Derek Reed and Tyler Triplett, according to probable-cause statements from both officers.
Wiley tried to block the doorway and then shoved Eldridge into the door, according to Eldridge.
Stewart then entered and was struck in the head by a full bottle of water thrown by Housman, Stewart wrote. While Eldridge was trying to restrain Wiley, he noticed Housman running out of the pod and assaulting Lucious, Eldridge wrote. Eldridge then tried to restrain Houseman, and Wiley threw a punch intended for Housman that struck Eldridge in the face, causing the corrections officer's head to hit the window in the booth, Eldrigde wrote.
Stewart tried to separate Reed, Triplett and Taylor, who were punching Lucious, Stewart wrote. As Stewart entered the center of the melee, he was hit with a punch in the left eye. He then hit Taylor with OC spray, prompting him to discontinue the fight, Stewart wrote.
Wiley, 34, of New Madrid, Missouri, Houseman, 21, of Cape Girardeau and Taylor, 20, also of Cape Girardeau were charged with felony assault of a corrections officer.
