Three candidates are vying for the two seats on the Delta School Board, including incumbent David Coomer of Whitewater and school booster club vice president Amy Swain. The other candidate is Mitchell White, who resides near Advance, Missouri.
The election will be held Tuesday.
Swain, who has a rural Cape Girardeau address, was the only one of the three candidates to respond to a Southeast Missourian election questionnaire sent via email to addresses they left with the county clerk's office.
If elected, Swain said she "would like to help grow participation in organizations such as PTO and the booster club.
"Our children are the most important thing, and if we continue to keep that in mind, there are no limits to what our district can do," she said.
Swain, who has a nursing degree, is employed as assistant district supervisor of Disability Determination Services in Cape Girardeau, which is administered through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
She said she has lived most of her life in the Delta School District.
Swain said, if elected, she would be "fair and approachable, always considering all sides before making a decision."
She said she has one child who finds learning easy and another child who has a learning disability. As a result, Swain said she "will be diligent in helping all students learn, including those that struggle."
