Before the carnival rides at Riverfest open on Friday and Saturday, there is another place where children can play. And this one won't cost their parents a dime.

Denise Schneider, chairman of children's activities at this year's Riverfest, has quite a venue of activities for children under 12 to enjoy.

"We'll have arts and crafts and games, and even a special appearance by Pocket the Clown," said Schneider."I can guarantee we will have plenty for kids to do."

Activities for children will be available at tables set out under the trees along Common Pleas Courthouse steps.

The children's activities tables will be open from 4-6 p.m. Friday and from noon-6 p.m. Saturday.

A large Plexiglas board will be set up for children to decorate with paintbrushes and markers.

"We've planned cotton ball races, musical chairs, relay races, storytelling sessions and other fun activities for kids," said Schneider. "And, of course, we'll be having the turtle relays and best-dressed turtle contest on Saturday."

Children under 12 can register for the turtle relays from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday. The race will be held at 3 p.m., with the best-dressed turtle contest to follow. Winners of each event will be awarded a $50 savings bonds donated by Boatmen's Bank.

Children can expect special-guest appearances by Pocket the Clown, Chuck E. Cheese and Jasper, and Louie the Lightning Bug.

Volunteers will have arts and crafts sessions where children will be able to color, design crowns they can wear during the festival and make visors and sunglasses from construction paper.

"We ask that parents don't just leave their kids with us and walk away," said Schneider. "We have enough volunteers to keep the children busy, but not enough to provide a babysitting service. Besides, some of the activities can be fun for the whole family."
