Police were investigating a convenience-store burglary in which burglars apparently used a sledgehammer or similar tool to gain entry through a brick wall.

Employees at Winks, Themis Street and Silver Springs Road, say it was the third time in two months the store has been targeted by thieves.

Police said cash was stolen Wednesday night after the burglars knocked a chunk out of a rear wall and made a hole large enough to crawl through.

"I guess they must have wanted in there pretty bad," said patrolman Jason Selzer.

The hole led into the office, and burglars helped themselves to the cash they could find, police said. Police would not say how much was stolen.

On previous occasions, thieves have broken the glass in the front doors.

The rear wall is illuminated by overhead lights, but the wall of another building blocks it from easy view.

Also Wednesday, a money bag and cash were stolen at Taco Johns, 111 N. Kingshighway. Police, who are investigating, said the safe was inadvertently left unlocked.
