A teenager was killed and another severely injured when the car they were in veered out of control on the Interstate 55 and landed in front of an on-coming tractor-trailer Wednesday morning. A passenger in the truck was also injured.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 8 a.m. Tuesday on I-55 at the 80-mile marker near Benton, Mo.
Kasi Clark, 17, of New Madrid, Mo., lost control of her northbound 2000 Dodge Neon and ran off the left side of the roadway. The car overturned in the median, the patrol said, then vaulted into the path of a southbound 198 International tractor-trailer rig driven by Cory Bufford of Enville, Tenn.
The two vehicles hit head-on.
A passenger in Clark's vehicle, Melissa Robinson, 16, of Lilbourn was killed. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:12 a.m. by Scott County Coroner Scott Amick.
Clark sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
A passenger in the truck, Katherine Bufford, 26, also of Enville, Tenn., the driver's wife, suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center.
