WOLF LAKE, Ill. -- Illinois State Police were investigating a two-vehicle accident that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy near Wolf Lake Sunday.
Being held on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage and reckless homicide was Gene L. Ellet, 42, of Grand Tower. Ellet was the driver of one of two pickup trucks that crashed on Route 3 about a mile north of Wolf Lake at 5:15 p.m.
Killed was Joseph S. Robertson of Grand Tower, a passenger in a pickup driven by Kenneth DeRossett, 22, of Grand Tower.
Illinois State Police said the DeRossett vehicle was going south on Route 3, and the Ellet vehicle was traveling north in the southbound lane.
The DeRossett truck swerved into the northbound lane, police said. At the same time the Ellet vehicle swerved, and the two trucks collided in "a sideswipe manner on the passenger sides," police said.
Robertson was partially ejected from the vehicle. No seat belts were being used by anyone.
Ellet was being held pending a preliminary hearing.
Robertson, a student at Shawnee High School near Wolf Lake, was the son of Michelle Robertson of Wolf Lake.
