English, mathematics, and science teachers from 22 high schools will be participating in context-based teaching workshops sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Regional Tech Prep consortium.
Local schools participating in the workshop include Advance, Cape Girardeau Central, Delta, Notre Dame, and Scott City. The seven-day program, scheduled throughout the fall semester, is designed to increase faculty awareness of changing needs in the workplaces of business and industry, and the actual development of context-based instructional units which could be incorporated into existing high school courses such as algebra and physics.
Workshop facilitator is Paul McInturff.
The Southeast Missouri Regional Tech Prep consortium is a federally funded joint project of Mineral Area College, Arcadia Valley Area Vocational-Technical School, Cape Girardeau Area Vocational-Technical School, Lead Belt Area Vocational-Technical School, and Perryville Career and Technology Center.
The concept of Tech Prep involves a two-plus-two educational program spanning the last two years of high school plus two years at a community or technical college. Graduates of the program will have had four years of job-specific preparation and will receive an associate degree.
