The deadline to apply is Jan. 16, 1998. Applications can be obtained from the Institute of International Education at 1-888-527-2636 or www.iie.org/pgms/fmf

The Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program was announced earlier this year by the Japanese government to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Fulbright Program, initiated by the U.S. government to exchange students and faculty worldwide.

Participants will spend several days in Tokyo where they will receive a practical orientation on Japanese life and culture, meet with government officials and Japanese educators and enjoy the city's cultural opportunities.

They will then split up into small groups and spend the next two weeks visiting a particular region where they will have direct contact with schools, teachers, students, teachers' colleges and experience local Japanese life. Each teacher will also experience a homestay with a Japanese family.
