Jerry Jansen has seen a number of changes in his field since he began teaching "shop" 19 years ago. The Chaffee industrial technology teacher for grades seven through 12 said the industrial arts aspect is still important, but more emphasis has been placed on technology in programs throughout the country in recent years.
"Learning woodworking and metalworking processes, procedures and techniques is still addressed as an important aspect within the parameters," said Jansen, who holds a bachelor of science degree in physical education and industrial arts, as well as a master's degree in industrial technology. "What has changed in our school is the addition of junior and senior high technology programs which emphasize subjects like computer-aided design, house design, robotics, problem-solving and plastics."
The evolved program is designed to help students receive information several different ways. Information is presented through video materials, textbooks, computer hardware and software, posters, worksheets, lectures, demonstrations, guest speakers and field trips, Jansen said. Because their learning experiences are always different, students enjoy the class more.
Jansen said he enjoys teaching students to become problem-solvers, and he encourages them to utilize skills in math, science and applied physics while in his class. His main purpose for teaching is to show his students how important industrial arts and technology is now and will be in the future.
"I try to present the students with an understanding and knowledge of technology that affects both the present and the future," he said. "This program's goal is to make students aware of our constantly changing, technology-driven society, and how very important it is to become prepared for the ever changing technological careers that will be needed in the future."
