Susan Hutteger likes teaching children because of the way they see the world.
"Second-graders are wonderful to work with," Hutteger said, "because they are very enthusiastic and really like to please their teachers.
"I like teaching at Cape Christian School because of all the support I get from everyone. The classes are small enough that I have more time to work with each child."
Hutteger received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Southeast Missouri State University with a specialization in art.
She regularly takes her students on field trips.
"This year, we will be going to the Veterans Home and the public library every other week," she said.
"We'll also go to a pet store to buy fish and set up an aquarium and learn about the care of tropical fish."
The school yard has many trees.
"We like to watch the many birds that perch on the branches," she said.
"We will make bird feeders and feed the birds all winter. The children have binoculars and keep a list of the birds they spot.
"My goal is to teach the children the excitement of learning; not only what is in their books but also the many beautiful things in the world that God has given us to enjoy."
Hutteger and her husband, Lyle, have two sons. Tim is a sophomore at Southeast and Greg is a sophomore at Cape Girardeau Central High School.
