JACKSON -- Ellen Lukens, a teacher at R.O. Hawkins Junior High School, has been honored as Educator of the Year by the Excelsior Chapter of the Order of DeMolay.

Lukens has taught language arts at the school for four years. She was recognized for her innovative reading programs and for recognizing the uniqueness of each individual.

She trains teachers how to score tests administered by the state Department of Education, and serves on the Missouri State Improvement Committee and the Middle School Committee for the Jackson School District.

Her husband Steven teaches language arts in Cape Girardeau.

DeMolay is an organization for young men between the ages of 13 and 21.
