Tommy Joe Davis III appeared via videoconference at the Cape Girardeau County Courthouse on Monday for his initial arraignment.
Davis, 29, of Cape Girardeau has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action for allegedly shooting a man at 523 Olive St. in Cape Girardeau on Wednesday morning. At the arraignment, Davis asked Judge Gary Kamp to reduce his $250,000 cash-only bond.
Kamp appointed a public defender to represent Davis while he is incarcerated and scheduled his next hearing, where the bond reduction will be considered, for 10 a.m. July 3.
Davis was taken into custody Wednesday in Metropolis, Illinois. The arrest came hours after police officers from multiple agencies surrounded Davis' home at 1314 Amblewood Drive in an attempt to bring him into custody.
A police spokesman said officers arrived at the home just after 5 a.m. and saw movement inside. Believing it was Davis, they attempted to contact him via loudspeaker and to persuade him to answer his phone or come outside.
Nearly six hours later, two men emerged from the home and revealed Davis was not there.
It was not clear at the time what connection the men had to Davis, but Sgt. Jason Selzer of the Cape Girardeau Police Department said Monday the men were "acquaintances or friends" staying with Davis.
Selzer said the men were brought in, questioned and released by police. No charges were filed and he said police determined the two were not trying to help Davis.
