Fowler was charged later Sunday with first-degree assault on a police officer and armed criminal action. Police said Fowler should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police said officers had been called to a disturbance at a house. Gunfire erupted when officers approached a vehicle to speak to the driver.

The St. Louis County officer was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police have recovered the vehicle that was driven from the scene.
